DOT-Required Drug Testing
Pre-Employment Drug Testing
Before operating a vehicle that requires a Commercial Driver’s License, all owner operators or employees must complete a pre employment drug test and return negative results
Reasonable Suspicion
If an employer has reason to suspect an employee may be under the influence of drugs or alcohol in the workplace, the employee in question may be asked to take a drug or alcohol test.
Post-Accident
Depending on the type of accident and the injuries sustained by those involved, drivers may be asked to take an immediate drug and alcohol tests to determine individual liability.
Return-To-Duty
If a driver has previously tested positive for drugs or alcohol, he or she must first return a negative result on a “return-to-duty” drug test before resuming workplace responsibilities.
Random Drug Testing
To remain DOT compliant, both owner operators and employees of transportation companies must join a consortium pool and submit for random drug tests throughout the year.
Follow Up
Drivers that have successfully completed the return-to-duty process (including a negative return-to-duty test) must be tested several times over the course of the following year.
What Happens After The Test?
Whether drug test results are positive or negative, Prime Diagnostic Testing (PDT) is careful to protect client confidentiality and results are always sent through proper channels to maintain discretion.
If tests return a positive result, our certified Medical Review Officer (MRO) will contact the employee to determine if any medical reasons may have affected the test, such as taking prescription medication; if no acceptable reason is found, the employee should be removed from performing safety-sensitive duties and management should consult the PDT's Drug and Alcohol Policy program policy to determine the next steps.
